WANT TO SING WITH US?
Membership in the Rappahannock Choral Society is by audition-only. The audition is not difficult but it helps us to determine voice range, voice quality and music reading ability. Rehearsals move quite fast and we need to make sure that you can keep up with the pace. We will also ask about your choral experience. The RCS also endeavors to maintain a balance between voice sections and the auditions enable us to do this. Auditions will take place prior to the first rehearsal each spring and fall.
WHAT DOES THE AUDITION ENTAIL?
About one week in advance, we supply you with the music and an appointment time. You will be requested to:
- Sing the melody in a range comfortable for your voice part.
- Sing your voice part (SATB) as part of a quartet.
A second song is optional to do the same as above. There is also some simple sight reading. Don’t worry…if you have played an instrument or have done any serious choral singing, you will have no problem demonstrating you music reading ability! As with our concert music, you are welcome to get any assistance to learn the music.
We average about 75 members of all ages and from all walks of life. Our rehearsals are Monday evenings from 7 to about 9 PM. The Zoan Baptist Church has graciously granted us to use their sanctuary for rehearsals. It is located at 5888 Plank Road, or diagonally opposite the Harrison Crossing Shopping Center (Giant & Home Depot) on Route 3. Our mailing address is P.O. Box 716, Locust Grove, VA 22508.
Membership dues are $35 per person ($65 couple) per concert season. Concert seasons run from September through the December concert dates, and from January through the May concert dates. Our concerts are always on the first full weekend of December and on Mother’s Day weekend in May.
Dues cover the use of a binder with the concert music, and a copy of the CD from the concert. Student dues are refunded at the end of each season once the student has demonstrated attendance responsibility. We have never refused membership to a qualified singer due to finances. All music is the property of the RCS and must be returned after the concerts.
We do not require you to purchase any special wardrobe. Standard concert dress is ladies – black to the floor-skirt or slacks, arms covered over the elbows; men – black suit, white shirt (we supply bow ties).
